Writing

We are determined that our children's love of reading enriches their love of writing, and that they have the skills and knowledge they need to become confident communicators.

In Nursery, children practise a variety of fine and gross motor skills and start mark making.

In Reception, handwriting is taught through our RWI Phonics scheme, and children develop their oracy and vocabulary through a high quality stories and oral sentence composition. Children begin to write short captions and sentences in phonics. Our focus is on developing the quality and joy of writing at sentence-level.

In Year 1, children develop their sentence writing and knowledge of grammar based on high quality texts. Children are introduced the The Write Stuff lenses to support their ability to start composing sentences more independently.

In Years 2-6, children are taught to write independently through The Write Stuff approach. This supports children to develop their handwriting, grammar and transcription through sentence-level work each day, using a range of literacy devices (lenses).

After sentence-level work, children have the opportunity to apply their learning and do their own independent writing. Our writing units are carefully planned to ensure that children have the opportunity to enjoy writing independently across a range of genres and for a range of purposes, and that grammar is taught in context and revisited frequently.
